ResMed AirSense 11: Complete Guide AutoSet vs Elite

ResMed AirSense 11 - Complete Guide 2025

The AirSense 11 is ResMed's latest generation CPAP/Auto CPAP device. Available in two versions - AutoSet and Elite - it is in 2025 the benchmark for therapeutic efficacy, connectivity and comfort. This guide explains everything you need to know to make the right choice.

Please note: VivaRespire is a Belgian online store. You purchase your device outright - outside the INAMI/RIZIV convention system, with no waiting list, no intermediary. Ideal if you want to start therapy quickly or if your AHI is below 15.

AutoSet vs Elite: what's the difference?

AirSense 11 AutoSet
  • Auto CPAP mode: pressure adjusted in real time
  • AutoSet-14 algorithm: detects apneas, hypopneas, snoring and RERAs
  • Intelligent leak management
  • Wi-Fi connectivity + myAir app
  • Integrated ClimateControl Auto
  • Compatible with HumidAir 11 and ClimateLineAir 11

AirSense 11 Elite
  • Fixed pressure mode (classic CPAP)
  • Prescribed when optimal pressure is already established
  • Same comfort features (EPR, humidification)
  • Identical Wi-Fi connectivity + myAir
  • Slightly lower price than AutoSet
  • Compatible with the same accessories

The AutoSet-14 Algorithm: how does it work?

The core of the AirSense 11 AutoSet is its AutoSet-14 algorithm, developed and patented by ResMed. Every 14 milliseconds, the device analyses the breathing signal and adapts the delivered pressure. It detects:

  • Obstructive apneas: complete upper airway obstruction
  • Hypopneas: partial reduction in airflow
  • Snoring: early indicator of partial obstruction
  • RERAs (Respiratory Effort Related Arousals): micro-arousals linked to breathing effort

In response, pressure gradually increases to open the airway, then decreases once breathing normalises. The result: pressure that is always appropriate - not too high (discomfort) and not too low (persistent apneas).

Wi-Fi Connectivity and myAir App

The AirSense 11 natively integrates Wi-Fi - a first for a consumer CPAP device. Each night, therapy data is automatically sent to ResMed servers. You can review it via the myAir app (iOS and Android):

  • Daily therapy score (out of 100 points)
  • Residual AHI, leak index, hours of use
  • Personalised tips to improve adherence
  • Data shareable with your doctor or sleep specialist

ClimateControl Auto and Smart Humidification

Humidification is crucial for long-term CPAP tolerance. The AirSense 11 offers:

  • ClimateControl Auto: automatically adjusts humidifier and heated tube warmth based on ambient temperature
  • HumidAir 11: integrated washable humidifier, exclusively compatible with AirSense 11
  • ClimateLineAir 11: dedicated 15 HT heated tube, eliminates condensation in the circuit

Mask Compatibility

The AirSense 11 is compatible with the full ResMed AirFit and AirTouch mask range, as well as masks from other brands (standard 22 mm connection). Most popular masks with this device:

AirFit F20
Full face mask - all sleep positions

AirFit F40
Minimal full face mask - low profile

AirFit P10
Nasal pillow mask - ultra-light

RIZIV/INAMI Convention in Belgium

In Belgium, the INAMI/RIZIV convention for CPAP is reserved for patients with an AHI ≥ 15 (moderate to severe apnea), managed through an accredited sleep centre. Under this system, the device is provided on loan - the patient never becomes the owner.

VivaRespire offers a direct purchase alternative, outside the convention. The right solution for:

  • People with AHI < 15 (not covered by INAMI)
  • Those who want to freely choose their device and mask
  • Those who want to start immediately, without administrative delays
  • Travellers and expatriates

Frequently asked questions about AirSense 11 AutoSet vs Elite

The hardware is identical: same enclosure, same display, same Wi-Fi connectivity, same accessories. The difference is software. The AutoSet runs in Auto CPAP mode: it adjusts pressure in real time based on your breathing. The Elite runs in fixed pressure mode: it delivers the prescribed pressure with no automatic adaptation. The Elite is prescribed when the optimal pressure is already known after lab titration.

In almost all out-of-convention cases, AutoSet is the right choice. You typically don't have a precise titrated pressure from a sleep centre, and the AutoSet algorithm finds the effective pressure on its own, night after night. The Elite only makes sense if you have a clear fixed-pressure prescription or very stable apnea. For 95 percent of out-of-convention patients, it's AutoSet.

AutoSet-14 is an evolution of the original AutoSet algorithm. ResMed reports improvements in fine event detection and mask leak management. In the field, patients moving from AirSense 10 to 11 report equivalent or slightly better comfort, but rarely a dramatic difference. The real value of AS11 comes mostly from native Wi-Fi and the enhanced myAir ecosystem.

Yes to both. myAir is the official ResMed app (iOS and Android), connected via native Wi-Fi, showing your therapy score, residual AHI, leaks and hours of use. OSCAR is a free, open-source software that reads data through the SD card inserted in the device. OSCAR delivers a much deeper analysis, useful for users who want to optimise their therapy.

ClimateControl Auto is included as standard in the AirSense 11, there is no extra cost. It automatically adjusts tube warmth and humidification based on ambient temperature. It's very useful in winter to avoid condensation, and in summer to prevent overheating. You keep the option to switch to manual mode if you prefer to set temperature and humidity yourself.

Yes, all ResMed AirFit and AirTouch masks work seamlessly on AirSense 10 and 11 thanks to the standard 22 mm connection. However, the tube and humidifier are not compatible between the two generations. You will need to use the ClimateLineAir 11 and HumidAir 11 specific to AirSense 11. Factor in that cost if you upgrade from AS10 to 11.

A prescription is not legally required to buy a CPAP in Belgium. We strongly recommend a prior medical diagnosis (polysomnography or polygraphy) and your doctor's input on the pressure range to program. This avoids using an unsuitable pressure. If you already have a sleep centre report, send it to us so we can correctly configure the device before shipping.
