CPAP Humidifier Guide 2025 - HumidAir 11 vs HumidAir II

CPAP Humidifier - Complete Guide for Warm, Comfortable Therapy

Dry mouth, irritated nostrils and a sore throat upon waking are among the most common CPAP complaints. The integrated heated humidifier solves these problems by adding heat and moisture to the delivered air. This guide explains how CPAP humidification works, how to adjust it and how to prevent condensation in the tube.

VivaRespire stocks the HumidAir 11 Cleanable (for AirSense 11) and HumidAir II (for AirSense 10). Fast European delivery.

Why Use a Humidifier with Your CPAP?

  • Dry mouth: feeling dehydrated upon waking, chapped lips.
  • Irritated or congested nostrils: dry air triggers the nasal mucosa to produce more mucus as protection.
  • Dry or sore throat: particularly common with nasal masks when the mouth opens during sleep.
  • Therapy abandonment: discomfort is one of the main reasons patients give up CPAP therapy.

Distilled Water: Mandatory, Not Optional

  • Limescale: hard water deposits scale in the water chamber, blocking sensors and reducing humidification efficiency.
  • Bacteria and minerals: tap water contains minerals and may carry micro-organisms that you would inhale during therapy.
  • Lifespan: scale deposits significantly shorten the water chamber's service life.
If you cannot find distilled water, use demineralised water (for steam irons). It works perfectly. As a last resort, bottled spring water is preferable to tap water.

ClimateControl Auto - The Optimal Combination

The ClimateControl Auto function is available on the AirSense 11 when used with the ClimateLineAir 11 heated tube and the HumidAir 11 Cleanable. This function automatically manages temperature and humidity for optimal comfort throughout the night, without condensation.

Rainout - Condensation in the Tube

Rainout occurs when warm, humid air from the humidifier cools in the tube and forms water droplets, creating a gurgling noise and potentially spraying water toward the mask.

Solutions

  • Main solution: heated tube. The ClimateLineAir 11 maintains constant air temperature throughout the tube, eliminating condensation.
  • Reduce humidification level by one step.
  • Keep the tube under the covers to insulate it from cold room air.
  • Position the device lower than your head.

Humidifier Maintenance

Daily: empty and rinse the water chamber each morning with clean water. Air dry.

Weekly: disassemble and wash with warm water and mild soap. Rinse thoroughly. Never use alcohol, bleach or abrasive products.

Lifespan: with regular maintenance and distilled water, the water chamber typically lasts 6-12 months.

Frequently asked questions about the CPAP humidifier

Not mandatory but strongly recommended. Most CPAP users suffer from dry mouth, irritated nostrils or sore throat without a humidifier, especially in winter and dry air. The heated humidifier removes these discomforts and significantly improves therapy compliance. If you are starting treatment, choose a device that integrates a humidifier from day one: it is the most rewarding investment in comfort.

Distilled water only, never tap water. Tap water contains limescale that deposits in the chamber, blocks sensors and shortens the reservoir's lifespan. It also contains minerals and sometimes micro-organisms you would inhale. If you cannot find distilled water, demineralised water for steam irons works perfectly. As a last resort, bottled spring water is preferable to tap water.

The HumidAir 11 is designed for the AirSense 11 (AutoSet and Elite). The HumidAir II fits the AirSense 10. Both have 380 ml capacity and a removable hand-washable design. They are not interchangeable: connectors and geometry differ. Both support the ClimateControl Auto function combined with the corresponding ClimateLineAir heated tube.

On the AirSense 11, go to My Settings > Heated Humidifier. Start humidity at 3 out of 8 and adjust to your comfort: increase to 4 or 5 if you have dry mouth, lower to 2 or 3 if you have condensation. For the heated tube, start at 27 degrees Celsius and adapt to your bedroom. With ClimateControl Auto enabled, the device manages these parameters on its own for optimal comfort.

Rainout comes from humid air cooling in the tube, especially when the room is cold. Solutions in order of effectiveness: 1) install a heated tube such as ClimateLineAir 11, this is the most radical solution; 2) lower humidification by one step; 3) tuck the tube under the blanket; 4) position the device lower than your head, so any droplets fall back toward the machine rather than the mask.

No. A heated CPAP humidifier draws between 30 and 90 watts on average overnight, less than an old incandescent bulb. Over 8 hours of operation at average power, you are looking at a few dozen cents per month in Belgium. The heated tube adds about 20 extra watts. It is negligible compared to the comfort gained and the improvement to your compliance.

Every morning, empty and rinse the reservoir with clean water, then air dry. Once a week, disassemble and wash with warm water and mild soap, rinse thoroughly and let dry completely. Never use alcohol, bleach or abrasive products that degrade the polypropylene. With regular maintenance and distilled water, the reservoir lasts 6 to 12 months.

Yes, but always empty the reservoir completely before any trip. Residual water can leak into the electronics and damage the device. On planes, carry the CPAP in cabin luggage (recommended by all manufacturers). For frequent travel, the ResMed AirMini is more compact: its HumidX system humidifies without a water reservoir using a filter cartridge.
