How to Choose the Right CPAP Mask Size
A poorly sized CPAP mask is the leading cause of leaks and discomfort. Too large and the cushion won't seat properly on the face. Too small and it compresses tissue and leaves painful marks. This guide explains how to measure your face and choose the correct size, brand by brand.

Why Does Mask Size Matter So Much?
Each manufacturer has its own sizing system, and templates vary from one model to another. A Medium from ResMed does not necessarily match a Medium from Fisher & Paykel. It is therefore essential to measure your face using the gauge specific to the model you are considering.
Never rely on your usual size or that of a previous mask from another brand to choose your next mask. Always use the provided or downloadable sizing guide.
How to Use a Sizing Template
- Print the template at 100% scale (verify the calibration ruler matches 5 cm or 10 cm as indicated).
- Hold the template against your face in front of a mirror.
- Position it according to the indicated reference points (often: starting point on the nasal bridge or just below the nose base).
- Identify which zone of the template best matches the width and height of your nose or chin.
- The corresponding zone indicates your recommended size.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Choosing the same size as a previous mask from another brand. Sizing systems are independent. Measure again each time you change brand or model.
- Going up a size for "more comfort". A mask that is too large will not seat properly and will leak more.
- Over-tightening the headgear to compensate for leaks. If you tighten heavily to avoid leaks, the size is likely wrong.
- Not printing the template at 100% scale. Always print without reduction and verify the calibration ruler on the template.
- Measuring with a long beard. A beard can distort measurements: measure preferably with a close shave.
Signs Your Current Size Is Wrong
- Persistent leaks despite a well-adjusted headgear.
- Red or painful marks upon waking (mask too small or too tight).
- Sensation that the mask is "floating" on the face (mask too large).
- Cushion rides up to the eyes during the night (mask too large).
When in doubt about your size, consider ordering cushions in two adjacent sizes to test. Replacement cushions are far less expensive than a complete mask.
