Oscimed, Swiss precision applied to sleep

Oscimed SA is a Swiss medical device manufacturer based in La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the canton of Neuchâtel. It was founded over twenty years ago to develop, manufacture and distribute medical devices built to Swiss precision standards. It then specialised in sleep medicine.

Oscimed describes itself as the European leader in anti-snoring products. Its solutions are exported worldwide. They are developed together with its own engineers and a network of physicians and sleep specialists.

Three ways to act on snoring

Snoring comes from the narrowing of the airway during sleep. The soft palate and the pharynx start to vibrate, and the noise appears. Oscimed covers the three recognised non-invasive approaches.

• Mandibular advancement: the SomnoFit, SomnoFit-S, SomnoFit-B and Somnolis devices move the lower jaw forward by a few millimetres during the night, to keep the airway open
• Positional therapy: the PosiForm Belt vibrating belt and the PosiForm positioning pillow encourage the sleeper to move onto their side instead of staying on their back
• Nasal dilation: the ClipAir nasal dilator holds the nostrils open, which lowers airflow resistance during nasal breathing

Positional therapy, the range we chose to carry

Sleeping on your back lets the tongue and the soft tissues fall towards the back of the throat. The airway narrows, snoring increases, and apnoeas follow. Oscimed states that around 55 % of snorers are positional. In other words, they snore markedly more on their back than on their side.

The PosiForm Belt answers that specific case. A small unit worn on a chest belt detects the supine position and emits a gentle vibration, adjustable over seven levels. You turn over, the vibration stops. The point is not to wake you, but to build a habit, night after night.

Who it is for, and when to seek medical advice

These solutions address simple snoring and mild, positional forms of sleep apnoea. They do not replace a CPAP therapy prescribed to you. If you wake up tired, if those around you notice breathing pauses, or if you feel drowsy at the wheel, see a doctor before buying anything.
